The American Academy of Health Care Providers in Addictive
Disorders is a nonprofit credentialing organization
devoted to maintaining quality standards for the provision
of treatment in the addictive disorders. The academy
was created to establish a core set of standards of
competence for addiction treatment professionals throughout
the world. The academy succeeded in creating the Certified
Addiction Specialist (CAS) credential. The academy unites
clinicians from a variety of disciplines under a single
standard of health care. Membership is comprised of
nurses, doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social
workers, and counselors unified in their commitment
to providing the highest quality of health care for
individuals suffering from addiction.

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) is
the nation's medical specialty society dedicated
to educating physicians and improving the treatment
of individuals suffering from alcoholism and other addictions.
ASAM is an association of physicians dedicated to improving
the treatment of alcoholism and other addictions, educating
physicians and medical students, promoting research
and prevention, and enlightening and informing the medical
community and the public about these issues. ASAM serves
its members by providing opportunities for education
and sharing experiences, and by promoting the development
of a body of professional knowledge and literature to
enhance the quality and increase the availability of
appropriate health care for people affected by addiction.

The mission of the National Association of Addiction
Treatment Providers (NAATP) is to promote, assist, and
enhance the delivery of ethical, effective, research-based
treatment for alcoholism and other drug addictions.
NAATP seeks to accomplish this mission by (1) providing
its members and the public with accurate, responsible
information and other resources related to the treatment
of these diseases; (2) advocating for increased access
to and availability of quality treatment for those who
suffer from alcoholism and other drug addictions; and
(3) working in partnership with other organizations
and individuals that share NAATP's mission and
goals.

NAADAC, the Association
for Addiction Professionals

NAADAC's new name - NAADAC, the Association for Addiction
Professionals - reflects the increasing number of tobacco,
gambling, and other addiction professionals who are
active in prevention, intervention, treatment and education.
With nearly 14,000 members and 47 State affiliates representing
more than 80,000 addiction counselors, NAADAC is the
nation's largest network of alcoholism and drug abuse
treatment professionals. These experts work to create
healthier families and communities through prevention,
intervention, and quality treatment. NAADAC promotes
excellence in care by providing education, clinical
training, and certification in the field of addiction
to help counselors provide the highest quality and most
up-to-date, science-based services to its clients, families,
and communities. Among the organization's national certification
programs are the National Certified Addiction Counselor
and the Master Addiction Counselor designations.
NAADAC produces two bimonthly publications for addiction
counselors. Addiction Professional covers emerging
treatment issues and tracks the latest developments
in the field. NAADAC News, the organization's
newsletter, reviews the latest legislative developments,
NAADAC business, and affiliate activities.

of Lesbian and Gay Addiction Professionals

Founded in 1979, the National Association of Lesbian
and Gay Addiction Professionals (NALGAP) is a membership
organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment
of alcoholism, substance abuse, and other addictions
in lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender (LGBT) communities.
NALGAP's mission is to confront homophobia and
heterosexism in the delivery of services to LGBT people
and to advocate for LGBT-affirming programs and services.
NALGAP provides information, training, networking and
advocacy, and support for addiction professionals, individuals
in recovery, and others concerned about LGBT health.

of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors

The National Association of State Alcohol and Drug
Abuse Directors, Inc. (NASADAD), is a private, not-for-profit
educational, scientific, and informational organization.
NASADAD was originally incorporated in 1971 to serve
state drug agency directors; in 1978 the membership
was expanded to include state alcoholism agency directors.
NASADAD's basic purpose is to foster and support the
development of effective alcohol and other drug abuse
prevention and treatment programs throughout every state.
