Outcome Measure
Reports
Description
The TSR was developed to be administered along
with the Addiction Severity Index (ASI). In-program
and out-program services (treatment provided by
referral agencies) used by a client can be measured
using this tool. Findings from these data can
be used to determine treatment variables that
are significant to an individual or group of individuals'
clinical outcomes.
Type of Tool
The 87-item tool was developed to be administered
by nonprofessional staff and counseling staff
in an interview format. This tool can be used
with all populations that exhibit enduring substance
abuse illness. It is not intended for clients
to self-report. A training
and scoring manual is available.
Attribution
The tool was developed by McLellan, Cacciola,
and Fureman (1996). The tool is in the public
domain, so there is no cost for its use.
Reliability and Validity
The TSR has been shown to have good test-retest
and inter-rater reliability (McLellan, Alterman,
Woody, & Metzger, 1992). Construct and predictive
validity have been established (McLellan, Alterman,
Woody, & Metzger, 1992; McLellan, Arndt, Woody,
& Metzger, 1993).
Administrative Burden
Initial, periodic, and follow-up administration
take approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete.
Performance Measures
- Physical health status

and referral sources, medical and mental health)
- Employment status
- Support system evaluation
- Alcohol/drug use
- Self-help utilization (e.g., Alcoholics Anonymous,
relapse prevention)
- Legal status (including incarceration, illegal
activities)
- Family status
- Mental/emotional status
